Keep it short and simple
A first date only has to answer one question: would I like to see this person again?
An hour or two is plenty. Choose something easy to say yes to and easy to end politely.
Gentle first date ideas
- Coffee or lunch somewhere quiet, in the daytime.
- A walk in a park, a garden or along the coast, where conversation comes easily side by side.
- A museum, gallery or garden centre, with plenty to talk about.
- Afternoon tea. Relaxed, and a little bit special.
Feeling nervous is normal
Your date is probably nervous too. Be yourself, ask questions, and don't worry about filling every silence.
Who pays?
There's no rule. Some people split it, some take it in turns, and some let whoever asked pay. A quick, light-hearted word avoids any awkwardness.
Stay safe
- Meet somewhere public, and make your own way there and back.
- Tell a friend or family member where you're going and who you're meeting.
