Decide when to tell people
You don't need anyone's permission, but sharing your news thoughtfully can make things easier.
Some people tell family as soon as they start dating; others wait until there's someone special. Either is fine.
Talking to your children
- Choose a calm moment and tell them yourself, rather than letting them find out.
- Reassure them that meeting someone new doesn't replace their parent or change your love for them.
- Give them time. Some children are pleased straight away; others need a while to adjust.
- Listen to their worries, and answer honestly.
Family and friends
Some people may be surprised, or worry that it's too soon. Most simply want you to be happy. Explaining what you're looking for, whether that's company, friendship or love, often helps.
Introductions
When you're ready, keep first meetings short and relaxed, somewhere neutral like a café or a walk. There's no need to rush.
