There's no right time
Some people feel ready within a year or two. For others it takes much longer, and some never want to. All of that is normal.
Whatever anyone else says, only you know when it feels right. Being ready doesn't mean you've stopped grieving or that you love your late partner any less.
Questions to ask yourself
- What am I hoping for? Company, friendship, someone to share days out with, or a new relationship?
- Could I enjoy getting to know someone without comparing them to the person I've lost?
- Am I doing this for me, rather than because others think I should?
- Could I talk about my partner without it being too painful to bear?
You don't need a perfect answer to any of them. If you're unsure, starting with a few friendly conversations is a gentle way to find out.
Starting gently
- Write a short, honest profile. It's fine to mention you've been widowed. Read talking about your late partner.
- Chat before you meet. There's no rush. Read taking it slowly.
- Give yourself permission to stop if it doesn't feel right. You can always come back later.
